个vs本vs张vs只vs条vs把vs件vs杯
3gè · běn · zhāng · zhī · tiáo · bǎ · jiàn · bēiChinese requires a classifier (量词) between a number or demonstrative and the noun: number/demonstrative + 量词 + noun. "One book" is NOT 一书 ❌ — it is 一本书 ✓. Every noun has a preferred classifier tied to its shape or nature, and these eight cover most everyday speech. Fallback rule: if you don't know the right one, use 个 — understood but not always natural. **二 vs 两 rule (both mean "two"):** Use 二 (èr) for pure counting and numerals — 一、二、三, 二月 (February), 第二 (second). Use 两 (liǎng) before a classifier when you mean "two of something" — 两本书 (two books) ✓, NEVER ❌ 二本书. Practical rule: if a 量词 follows, it is 两; if it is a bare number, it is 二.
